Influential book list helps teachers, parents and librarians choose books for primary age children
In just three months since its launch, over 1500 people have registered on the new Core Books Online website from renowned and trusted literacy education charity the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE).
Core Books Online is a unique resource compiled by CLPE to help teachers ensure they have a range of high quality, tried and tested books in their classrooms. It contains recommendations of books for engaging children from age three to eleven with reading and literacy development.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Man Charitable Trust it is available
free to support teachers, schools, librarians and parents.
Louise Johns-Shepherd, CLPE’s Chief Executive said:
"We are thrilled to be offering Core Books Online as a free resource and very grateful that the Man Charitable Trust has supported us to do this. Sharing our knowledge about great books which we know inspire, engage and motivate children to read helps us to ensure all children have the opportunity to develop a love of reading for pleasure which in turn improves their literacy chances and benefits them later in life.
There are so many wonderful children’s books available that teachers don’t have time to sift through them all. With the demise of school library services and the lack of funding for qualified, knowledgeable librarians a resource like this becomes even more invaluable.
We’ve been overwhelmed at the buzz around the website as we have not promoted it widely yet we know from feedback that schools are already finding it an indispensable resource. And we know parents are using it too, seeking inspiration for what to read to and with their children."
The Core Books Online website replaces the Core Book List, a paper publication which schools previously had to purchase. By moving it online, users benefit in many more ways than simply saving money. The website is updated regularly with new titles and relevant recommendations, it houses many more titles than a printed publication, contains ready-created booklists and gives users the freedom to create wish-lists and download free teaching resources to support teaching with texts in the classroom.
As with all professional development and resources offered by CLPE, Core Books Online supports literacy teaching and learning in the National Curriculum 2014 and EYFS 2014.
